Honest Interactive Brokers Review
Global Markets, Pro-Grade Tools
Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is the most capable broker I hold an account with — and the least friendly. This is the honest version: what IBKR is genuinely great at, where it grinds, and exactly who it fits.

I keep a funded IBKR account alongside my primary broker (Webull) and my shorting account (TradeZero). This review is based on my own account plus facts I verified in July 2026 — nothing here is recycled marketing copy.
Why IBKR Is On My Desk
Nobody opens an Interactive Brokers account because it's easy. You open one because it does things no other retail broker does — and once you need those things, nothing else really substitutes. IBKR is where Wall Street habits meet a retail login: direct access to global exchanges, institutional-depth short inventory, and pricing built for volume rather than simplicity.
What actually earns it a spot on my desk:
- 170+ global markets from one account — stocks, ETFs, options, futures, forex, and bonds, with the ability to deposit and trade in up to 29 currencies. No other broker in my lineup comes close.
- Two pricing plans: IBKR Lite ($0 commissions on U.S. stocks and ETFs) or IBKR Pro (per-share pricing with SmartRouting and lower margin rates).
- The deepest short-selling inventory I've seen anywhere — roughly 19,700 shortable U.S. stocks as of July 2026, with a lookup tool that shows availability and borrow rates before you commit.
- Real APIs — TWS API, a Web API, and FIX connectivity. As a developer, this is the one broker where I can build against my own account.
- Overnight trading on 10,000+ U.S. stocks and ETFs — nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week.
- Competitive interest on idle cash — up to 3.13% on the Pro plan at current benchmarks.
IBKR Lite vs IBKR Pro
Every IBKR decision starts here, so let's get it out of the way. Lite is the retail plan: $0 commissions on U.S. exchange-listed stocks and ETFs, funded partly by payment for order flow. Pro is the trader plan: you pay per share, and in exchange your orders go through IBKR's SmartRouting, which shops venues for price instead of selling your flow. Pro also unlocks the full Trader Workstation (TWS) without restrictions, better margin rates, and better interest on cash.
| What | IBKR Lite | IBKR Pro |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. stocks & ETFs | $0 | Tiered from $0.0035/share (min $0.35) or fixed $0.005/share (min $1) |
| Order routing | PFOF — routed to market makers | SmartRouting across venues; direct routing available |
| Margin rate | Benchmark + 2.5% | Benchmark + 1.5%, falling to + 0.5% at higher balances |
| Interest on idle cash | Benchmark − 1.5% | Benchmark − 0.5% (up to ~3.13% right now) |
| Trader Workstation | Limited | Full access |
My take: if you're active enough to be reading this site, Pro is the plan that makes IBKR worth having. Lite gets you a decent free account, but the routing and the tools are the whole reason to be here. You can switch plans inside your account.
What It Costs
IBKR's pricing philosophy is the opposite of "one simple number" — it's granular, and it rewards volume. The essentials, verified July 2026:
| What | Cost |
|---|---|
| Stocks & ETFs (Lite) | $0 |
| Stocks & ETFs (Pro, tiered) | From $0.0035/share · min $0.35/order · max 1% of trade value |
| Options (per contract) | $0.65 standard; tiered as low as $0.15–$0.25 with volume · min $1/order |
| Account / inactivity / annual fee | $0 |
| Account minimum | $0 |
| Withdrawals | First each month free; small fee after (varies by method) |
| Currency conversion | 0.2 basis points · min $2 — among the cheapest anywhere |
| Margin interest (Pro) | Benchmark + 0.5–1.5% — published rates start around 4.1% right now |
| Market data | Basic real-time U.S. data free; consolidated feeds & Level 2 are paid subscriptions |
Two honest notes. First, market data subscriptions are the quiet cost — the account is cheap, but if you want consolidated real-time quotes and depth, you'll pay a few dollars a month per feed, and it adds up. Second, regulatory pass-through fees apply on Pro like everywhere else. Rates move with the Fed and IBKR's own schedule, so confirm current numbers when you sign up.
Free to open, no minimum — you pick Lite or Pro during signup and can switch later.
Trading Hours
This is quietly one of IBKR's best features. Between the extended sessions and the overnight session, U.S. stocks are tradable nearly around the clock on weekdays:
- Pre-market: 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM ET
- After-hours: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET
- Overnight: 8:00 PM – 3:50 AM ET on 10,000+ U.S. stocks and ETFs — the week runs from Sunday 8:00 PM through Friday 3:50 AM.
If you've ever watched news break at 10 PM and had to sit on your hands until pre-market, you understand why this matters.
Account Types
Where Webull covers the essentials, IBKR covers essentially everything: individual and joint accounts, Traditional and Roth IRAs, trusts, custodial accounts, and a full menu of advisor and institutional structures. If your financial life is complicated — multiple entities, international residency, a family trust — IBKR is one of the few brokers that won't make you go elsewhere.
FINRA's $25,000 Pattern Day Trader minimum was eliminated as of June 4, 2026, replaced by a real-time intraday margin framework, and IBKR has removed the $25K minimum accordingly — the standard $2,000 margin-account floor still applies. Brokers have until October 2027 to fully phase in the new framework, so verify the current status in your own account. See the broker comparison for more.
Execution & Order Routing
This is where the Lite/Pro split really matters. On Lite, IBKR operates like other $0-commission brokers: orders route to wholesale market makers that pay for the flow. On Pro, equity orders go through SmartRouting — IBKR's system continuously scans exchanges and re-routes to whatever venue is showing the best price at that moment. If you want even more control, TWS lets you direct-route to a specific exchange yourself, which is something no PFOF broker offers at all.
For a scalper or momentum trader, this is the honest calculus: on Webull I pay nothing and accept wholesale fills; on IBKR Pro I pay a fraction of a cent per share for routing that works for me instead of being the product. On fast-moving, thin names, that trade-off starts to favor IBKR quickly.
Short Selling
IBKR runs one of the largest securities-lending operations in the business, and it shows: as of July 2026, roughly 19,700 U.S. stocks are shortable out of about 23,400 listed for trading, plus thousands more across Europe and Asia. The Short Securities Availability tool shows you the available quantity, number of lenders, and the current indicative borrow rate before you place the trade — and you can pre-borrow shares to lock availability. Borrow fees are passed through at market rates rather than marked up into opaque "locate" charges.
If shorting hard-to-borrow small-caps is core to your strategy, this is the deepest pool of shares you'll find at a retail-accessible broker. It's the single strongest argument for keeping an IBKR account even if you trade primarily somewhere else.
For the Builders: IBKR's APIs
I'll flag my bias: I've spent 25+ years building for the web, so a broker that treats programmatic access as a first-class feature gets my attention. IBKR offers the TWS API, a REST-style Web API, and FIX connectivity — real, documented interfaces you can build tooling against, plus free paper trading to test without risking a dollar. Most retail brokers offer nothing of the kind. If you've ever wanted to automate your own scans, journaling, or order entry, IBKR is the broker that lets you.
Is IBKR Safe?
Yes — by any reasonable measure. Interactive Brokers LLC is registered with the SEC, is a FINRA member, and is SIPC-protected up to $500,000 (including $250,000 in cash). The parent company, Interactive Brokers Group, trades publicly on the Nasdaq under IBKR, and the firm's roots go back to the late 1970s. This is about as established as brokers get.
Who It's For
IBKR is the right fit if you need what only IBKR has: international markets beyond U.S. exchanges; serious short-selling inventory for small-cap strategies; API access to build your own tooling; per-share pricing with routing you control; or nearly 24-hour access to U.S. stocks. It also fits high-volume traders whose commissions fall with tiered pricing, and anyone holding meaningful idle cash who'd like it to earn a real rate.
It is not the right first broker for someone brand new. The platform assumes you know what you're doing, the plan structure takes a decision before you've placed a single trade, and the learning curve is measured in weeks, not minutes. If that's you, start with the broker comparison — there are friendlier front doors.
Where It Comes Up Short
It's not perfect, and the gaps here are real:
- The learning curve is steep. TWS is genuinely powerful and genuinely intimidating — menus within menus, and defaults built for professionals. The newer IBKR Desktop app is a friendlier on-ramp, but "friendly" is graded on a curve here.
- Customer service is the most common complaint. On Trustpilot, IBKR sits at 3.2 / 5 across 5,404 reviews as of July 2026. Reviewers consistently praise the low costs and enormous product range — and just as consistently report difficulty reaching support, slow responses, and an interface they find confusing or dated. That split matches my read of the platform exactly: the trading engine is world-class; the wrapper around it is not.
- Market data costs are à la carte. Real-time consolidated quotes, depth, and news feeds are separate subscriptions that quietly add a monthly cost most $0-commission brokers bundle in.
- The Lite/Pro fork adds friction. The plan you pick changes your routing, margin rate, and cash interest — a decision most brokers never ask retail customers to make.
- Compliance runs conservative on small-caps. Some active small-cap traders report IBKR applying Rule 144-style volume checks more aggressively than rival brokers — orders flagged or held for compliance review when a position gets large relative to a thin stock's volume. I haven't hit this myself, but if momentum small-caps are your bread and butter, it's worth knowing the exit door can involve a compliance desk.
So why 4.0? Because the power is real and the friction is real, and I'm not going to pretend either away. On pure capability — markets, routing, shorting, APIs — IBKR is a 5, and the industry agrees: StockBrokers.com scores it 5.0 / 5 for 2026 with ten #1 category awards, including #1 International Trading. On the experience of actually living in it day to day — the interface, the support, the à-la-carte data — the crowd's 3.2 isn't wrong either. A 4.0 is where those two truths honestly meet: an exceptional trading engine that still makes you work for it.
Bottom Line
Interactive Brokers is the broker I'd keep if I could only keep one capability — no other account replaces its global reach, its short inventory, or its APIs. But it's not the broker I reach for first every morning, because raw capability isn't the same as day-to-day comfort. My honest recommendation: if you're an active trader building a serious multi-broker setup, an IBKR account belongs in it. If you're picking your first broker, learn the ropes somewhere friendlier and come back when you need what only IBKR does.
Still figuring out the basics?
IBKR is a power tool, and power tools come last, not first. A broker only really matters once you know what kind of trading you're doing — so if you're not sure yet, start with types of trading, and keep the glossary open for anything here that doesn't make sense. When you're ready to size a trade, the position size calculator is free and needs no signup. And if you're still weighing options, the broker comparison puts ten side by side.
